Yosemite
Yosemite National Park is in California’s Sierra Nevada mountains is a well-known spot. It’s known for its giant ancient sequoia trees, waterfalls, hiking trails and great rock climbing opportunities.
I’ve actually only done Yosemite on a day trip I linked to below and while I do wish I had more time, I think you can surely have a great time. In a day I was able to do three small hikes, see waterfalls and sequoias, and didn’t feel rushed at all.

Point Reyes
Point Reyes is an interesting place with many iconic spots such as shipwreck, cypress tunnel or fields full of flowers overlooking the coast. Plus, if you go there during the winter you may be able to spot some whales.
Napa Valley
Napa Valley is the spot for wine lowers. There are so many wineries to visit, each with a different character, that you can easily spend a few days driving around.
My personal favorite winery in the area is Castello di Amorosa. Sure, it’s not an off the path small spot, but it looks like a castle straight out of Tuscany and their wine is actually delicious. Last time I purchased a few bottles.

Muir Woods & Sausalito
Muir Woods is a spot where you can see giant redwood trees. It’s seriously breathtaking and worth your time! The whole monument is peaceful and lush.
Muir Woods National Park Service does NOT allow any tour guides to lead guided tours within the parks, but detailed commentary and best routing map information are provided on the way to Muir Woods.
Note that there is NO cell phone service at or around Muir Woods.

How far is Los Angeles to Napa Valley and Sonoma and how long will the road trip take?
Los Angeles is about 500 miles from Napa Valley and Sonoma. Depending on which roads you take, the trip could take upwards of 6 hours and 20 minutes of pure driving to complete.
While in theory, you can leave Los Angeles at breakfast time and arrive in Sonoma in time for dinner, it would be better to break up the journey over the course of two or three days — this way, you can fully appreciate some of the main attractions along the route.
One of the biggest draws of this road trip is the large number of cities you’ll be passing on the way, so to make the most of the drive, try to devote at least a day to each of them if you have the time.
However, keep in mind that having so many tourist cities to drive through means you’re practically guaranteed to run into traffic, especially near the Los Angeles area. Keep a close eye on the congestion near the cities and make strategic stops to avoid traffic jams.

Taste allocation-only Cabernet Sauvignon
Cabernet Sauvignon is the most prized (and most expensive) grape in Napa Valley, accounting for more than half of all vineyard acreage. While it can be fun to search out your favorite wines from home and see where they are made, it’s even more exciting to try something rare and exclusive that you can’t find at your local liquor store.
For example, Memento Mori and BRION are two wineries specializing in 100% Cabernet Sauvignon wines from some of Napa Valley’s most iconic vineyards. Each will only schedule a couple of one-on-one tastings a day, but you can simply request an appointment through their websites. Be prepared to spend more than $200 a bottle – but for true Cabernet connoisseurs, it’s worth it.
BRION is the newest winery in Napa Valley, with a lovely tasting room overlooking Sleeping Lady Vineyard, while Memento Mori hosts tastings at a discreet salon in an industrial district in Napa. Its flagship Cabernet is strong, supple and sublime.
You’ll also find the largest collection of Napa Valley wines in the world at PRESS, where you can peruse pages and pages of Cabernet Sauvignon dating back to the 1960s to pair with your 60-day dry-aged tomahawk chop steak.

Have a picnic
Fuller Park in downtown Napa is a popular spot for locals to picnic, surrounded by historic homes, with a public bocce court, rose garden, picnic tables, ample lawns and a playground for kids. Plus, it’s close to First Street so you can load up on sandwiches from First & Franklin or sushi from Eiko’s. The Model Bakery and Oakville Grocery are a couple of my favorite places to stock up on picnic staples like bread, cheese and pastries.
Bouchaine Vineyards in Carneros offers a BYO picnic experience with socially distanced picnic tables scattered throughout the flower-filled garden. Visitors receive a wine bag with a wine key, water, two logo crystal wine tumblers and a bottle each of Bouchaine’s Estate Pinot Noir and Estate Chardonnay, for $150 for groups of six or less.

Joshua Tree National Park is where two deserts meet: The Colorado Desert and the Mojave Desert. There are lookout points and there’s even a cactus garden. You can camp overnight in Joshua Tree and there’s also rock climbing. It’s one of the premier places on earth for bouldering. We only suggest spending a day here on this California Road Trip Itinerary, but if you have more time, put a tent in the back of your car and spend a couple of days hiking Joshua Tree and exploring more of California

Это расстояние можно легко проехать и за один день, но мы разбили дорогу на два дня, так как брали машину на прокат в день отъезда, поэтому из Сан-Франциско выехали только часов около 11-ти дня, да и в целом не хотелось торопиться, понимая, что в Долине Смерти будет много остановок.
Из Сан-Франциско мы поехали по мосту Золотые Ворота, затем по 580-му шоссе доехали до трассы № 99 (можно было и до шоссе № 5) и поехали до городка Бейкерсфилда, где остановились на ночевку. В первый день мы проехали почти половину пути — чуть больше 500 километров. Но и-за позднего выезда и загруженной дороги к мотелю приехали около 7-ми вечера.
В Бейкерсфилде топливо стоит примерно по 4,40$ за галлон. Дальше топливо будет чуть дешевле, в городках около озера Изабелла топливо стоит 3,95-4$.

Долина Смерти
Дорога от Бейкерсфилда до Лас-Вегаса довольно интересная. Часть маршрута проходит по горам с довольно крутым серпантином, по пути будут встречаться горные реки о озёра. Большая же часть пути будет проходить через пустыню, в том числе через национальный парк Долина Смерти.
В двадцатых числах апреля в пустыне температура держалась на уровне +43 +45 градусов. Палящее солнце, сухой обжигающий воздух и ни одного деревца на километры вокруг. В общем, всё как положено.
Почти в самом начале Долины смерти будет природная смотровая площадка Father Crowley Overlook. Советуем сделать здесь короткую остановку.
Риолит
Примерно через 15 километров после пересечения границы штата Невада находится еще одно интересное место — заброшенный городок Риолит. Этот город был основан в начале 1900-х годов кладоискателями. К 1908-му году население города достигало восьми (по другим источникам около пяти) тысяч человек, но из-за быстрого истощения запасов золота жители начали покидать город и уже к 1920-му году там никого не осталось.

Лас-Вегас
За второй день пути мы проехали около 580-ти километров. На самом деле это были пятьсот восемьдесят очень интересных километров. Это классно, когда ты оказываешься в таких местах, которые совершенно необычны для тех регионов, откуда ты сам. Собственно, именно ради этого мы все и путешествуем.
И так, Лас-Вегас. Третья большая остановка в нашем огромном маршруте. Позади уже почти 1800 километров, а впереди три дня отдыха. Отдельно стоит заметить, что бассейн в мотеле оказался очень к месту.
Здесь машину мы не стали сдавать, так как в один из дней ездили к Плотине Гувера.

Ночной Лас-Вегас
День 1. Прибытие
Янтвилл — удобная отправная точка для исследования долины Напа. В этом городке живет всего 3 тысячи человек, но он не лишен своих прелестей. Именно в Янтвиле расположен Музей долины Напа, экспозиция которого демонстрирует краткую историю региона: от первых виноделов XIX века до невероятного развития долины в последние 50 лет. В музее также проводятся временные выставки местных художников.

5. Coastal Highway Stops
This drive takes 3 hours from Big Sur to Santa Maria, but take you time to see all the sights.
We continue down the coast from Big Sur to the charming town of Santa Maria, which is one of our favorite California road trip stops. Be sure to give ample time for breaks on this route. There is still a lot more to see on this portion of the California Coast and you can easily spend a day exploring the sites as you make your way to your next overnight stop.
- Hearst Castle – Built by San Simeon, this incredible estate was built on 127 acres on a hill overlooking San Simeon. Pop in for a tour of America’s castle before driving on to spend the night in the lovely town of Santa Maria.
- Morrow Bay – Another beautiful beach, Morrow Bay’s main attraction is Morrow Rock, a 180-meter tall volcanic plug standing proud offshore.
- Pismo Beach is another place to stop if you still have time before spending the night in Santa Maria.
How much does it cost to Road Trip in California?
As you’ve seen, your California road trip itinerary can move in a lot of different directions. There were a lot of stops we didn’t even make because this state is so enormous. As such, the cost can vary greatly depending on lodging.
Accommodation – If you stay in a campground you will pay $35 per night but you can also spend up to $1000 per night in luxury lodges like Ventana in Big Sur or the Four Seasons in Santa Barbara.
This road trip is 1500 miles in total. If the average car gets 20 miles per gallon and the average cost of fuel is $3.50 per gallon, you can expect to pay $262 in fuel for this trip.
Meals too can have a broad range. If you want a multicourse meal at some of the luxury hotels, you can spend up to $200. but you can also hit roadside diners for $20. We mixed and matched packing lunches, eating in diners and sometimes splurging on gourmet meals. We suggest you do the same to make the most of your trip.
If you can get breakfasts included and pack sandwiches and waters for lunch, you have just saved a lot of money for a romantic dinner out.

This is a road trip, so obviously you’re going to want a hire a car! We nearly always hire cars for our US road trips through Enterprise. We generally find they have the most competitive prices and widest choice of locations, plus if you’re thinking of a one way trip they have reasonable fees for doing that.

Drivers with foreign licenses are allowed to drive, if your license is in a language other than English then you would be best with either an international drivers license, or a certified translation.
Another option of course is to hire a camper van or RV, which will let you stay in campgrounds and other, more out of the way areas. This can be a fun way to travel in a more self sufficient style. We’ve come to the next metropolis on our California Road Trip and it is time to explore L.A. Los Angeles is a good place to start for southern California road trips. Who doesn’t love Los Angeles? There are so many things to do in LA, that you could have your entire California road trip right here.
Things to do in Los Angeles
The possibilities are endless for sightseeing in L.A. so you can decide how long you want to stay here. From Universal Studios and Disneyland to hiking up to see the Hollywood sign or follow the Hollywood Walk of Fame. You must get out to see the beaches of Los Angeles. Our favorite beach is Manhattan Beach where you can see the famous 90210 beach house. But everyone loves popping over to Venice Beach too. I hope you’ve rented a nice car to drive along Rodeo Drive but if not, don’t worry, you’ll fit right in with the Bohemian atmosphere of Venice Beach. When to Take a California Road Trip
California is a fairly good year round destination, but there are a few things to be aware of when planning your trip. In the Winter months, places like Yosemite can become accessible particularly from the east side, due to snow, as you can see in the map above.
The main road in to Yosemite is the Tioga Road, and this is usually closed from November through to May or even June. In addition, parts of the park, including Glacier Point road, are often closed for a similar timeframe.
If this happens to you, you’ll have to take a serious detour to get in based on this itinerary. A better option might be to embrace the snow, and head up to Lake Tahoe for some fantastic skiing opportunities. Or, you can head east, out to Nevada and the pleasure city of Las Vegas.
In summertime, the heat can be quite intense, in particular in places like Death Valley, where in the summer months temperatures can exceed 100F, and it’s not recommended to spend much time outside.
Top Tips For Driving The Pacific Coast Highway
1. Drive North to South
The sea views are better if you drive it from north to south, otherwise, you’ll be on the wrong side of the road.
2. Where to Start?
San Francisco is an ideal place to start your road trip. You can easily fly into SFO Airport, do some sightseeing, rent a car and start your road trip.
While you don’t need a car in San Francisco as parking is ridiculously hard to find and expensive, if you want to visit Yosemite, or Giant Sequoias, you could consider renting a car during your stay in SF as well.
3. Plan Your Stops Carefully
Make sure you have a plan for your road trip and consider accommodation choices beforehand. During the spring and summer, many places get booked up easily, especially in Big Sur, and you don’t want to be stuck without accommodation.
4. Check Road Closures
Unfortunately, landslides are an often occurrence on Highway 1, so check beforehand whether some parts of the are blocked.
For instance, during my visit everything between Gorda and Hearst Castle was shut down, so to see the Big Sur we had to drive down south and go through the mountains later which added quite a bunch of time.
Also, you don’t want to drive through Big Sur with an empty tank. While there’s a small gas station in Gorda the price was $7 per gallon. Yes, you read that correctly!
5. Rent a Good Car
While you may originally want to rent a fancy red convertible car, like from American movies, let me tell you that it might not be the best idea.
It gets really cold and windy in the mornings and evenings and really messes my hair, so I don’t particularly like driving with a top-down.
In my opinion, as long as you can open your windows you’ll be fine and save money. Unless, obviously, you want to use your car in a fancy photoshoot
Long stretches of the PCH have no radio or cell service, so make sure that you have a good playlist for your road trip. That said, don’t forget a car phone charger!
There’s no one single place to find the best deal for a rental car, as promotions they change on a regular basis. The best place to find your car is Discover Cars as it gives you many different providers. Make sure you check the full price, including a fee for a drop-off at a different location.
6. Decide When to Go
Keep in mind that the summer months while warm, are rather foggy on the California coast. You might get lucky, but don’t count on the best clear skies in the morning.
For best weather and best chance of sunshine, plan your PCH road trip in September or October. Normal temps are in the 60-70’s, so bring a jacket and sweater for the day.
